Disable Paywave

Chat isn't available at present so I'm asking here.

I would like to disable paywave or whatever Bankwest calls it.

I have been able to do that on my Commonwealth Bank Visa card but can't see anywhere to do it with the Bankwest Mastercard.

There have been a number of times where the card has been detected by a terminal before I have deliberately used it and I have had to cancel a transaction.

Once the terminal at a Petrol Station wanted me to pay for someone elses fuel, I heard the beep and the operator was able to cancel it.

I don't trust the function.

My alternative is to not use the card or punch out the rfid module.

Thanks

Hi @Talbs, thanks for your question in regards to this. Contactless payments are a permanent feature of your Mastercard credit card and cannot be turned off, however you can choose not to complete a contactless transaction by swiping or inserting your card instead. Your card cannot be accidentally charged by walking past a contactless reader, as your Mastercard has to touch the reader in order to work.

You can learn more here about how contactless payments work. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply.

I am interested in what you said about having to touch the reader because I have had an instance when using a Comm Bank Visa card where I hadn't touched the reader and it registered.

I thought I had the same thing occur with the Mastercard so I will see what happens next time.

I just read the Bankwest article on how it works, probably should have found that first :-)

Could swiping or inserting the card be regarded as touching (did it detect the chip first) or does it have to be in a certain location on the reader?

Cheers

Hi @Talbs, the card should generally need to be directly above the reader, however the exact distance will differ depending on the reader itself and not the card. However a reader should  not pick up a transaction as PayPass if you are swiping or inserting your card.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your wallet @Sadakila08 - can I ask if you have contacted us to arrange a transaction dispute for these charges? While I know this won't help with what has already happened - for future reference we do also have Easy Alerts available in our app which you can set up to notify you anytime the PayPass feature is used, and we also have the ability to place a hold on your card within the app, so if you get a notification of any unauthorised transactions you can stop the card from being used any further.
