Special Cheque Clearance

I'd like to know what a Special Cheque Clearance is and how is it requested? I recently deposited a large cheque via Bank Post and was told by a Bankwest rep via phone that  depositing would be no different to using a Bankwest branch, no deposit amount limit, and clear within 3-5 days. I have just been told today that the cheque is going to take at least a week (7 days) to clear. And no one can tell me whether Australia Post sends the cheque (in Brisbane) to the Brisbane Branch in Queen St for processing!  I'm hoping it's not being sent to Perth which is why it's taking so long to clear. I'd appreciate any information.
