Compromised Cards

I recently had my card cancelled due to the possibility of it being compromised.

There were no associated dodgy transactions so I am wondering what would cause such a compromise? I am asking generally, not for my specific case. Thanks!

Hi @Alex314, I'm sorry to hear this has happened. Usually when this happens, it means that MasterCard have provided Bankwest with information that your card has been compromised, which could have occurred within the last 12 months or longer. We don't own the relationship with the merchant, which means unfortunately we don't have any information as to where this took place. A police or forensic investigation will be completed (it could have even already occurred), and any affected terminals will be dealt with to ensure they aren't at risk any further. A compromise doesn't mean that the merchant is fraudulent; it's that they have been targeted by fraudsters, who could have obtained card data through a skimming device or by hacking. Bankwest has a duty of care to make sure that your funds are secure, so even if there was nothing debited from your account, we need to make sure that it doesn't happen, which is why you will receive a new card. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the explanation @DanaeC. I was wondering if I needed to change the use of my card but it sounds like that is not the cause of this problem.
